Russian Hair, Brazilian Hair, Peruvian Hair, Indian Hair, Cambodian Hair, Vietnamese Hair, Chinese Hair - WHAT EXACTLY IS THE DIFFERENCE??
Posted on July 13 2020
When researching human hair extensions online, you may have come across a lot of different terms to describe human hair types, including Russian, Brazilian, Peruvian, Indian, Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Chinese hair. So, what exactly do these terms mean and what is the actual difference between these hair types?
Theoretically speaking, the aforementioned terms should signify the origin of the hair ie where the hair came from originally. In theory, Russian Human Hair signifies hair that came from Russian donors located in Russia, Brazilian Human Hair signifies hair that came from Brazilian donors located in Brazil, so on and so forth. The idea being that the origin of the hair would determine characteristics of that hair type. However, the truth of the matter is that the hair industry can be quite misleading. Most of the hair that you see online which is labeled ‘Russian’, ‘Brazilian’ or otherwise is actually hair from China, which has been dyed and chemically processed, then labeled some exotic location as a marketing ploy.
Most hair companies opt for sourcing hair extensions that are mass produced by factories in China because they can purchase this hair for low costs and it comes in a variety of premade colors and textures. Not much information is known about how exactly the Chinese manufacturers source the raw hair material, but many Chinese manufacturers confirm that the hair is sourced from local donors in China. The hair is bleached, cuticles are stripped off, and the hair is chemically processed to reach a number of colors and textures. Prior to packaging, the hair is dipped in silicone to create a perfect shiny finish. While this is a quick and easy sourcing option for many hair companies, the problem with hair that is mass produced by factories is the fact that the majority of this hair is overly processed. While this hair may appear thick and shiny when it’s fresh out of the package, it likely will not last very long. It tends to get dry very quickly and lose it’s luster after just a few weeks of wear.
Knowing that there exists a negative reputation surrounding Chinese-sourced hair, many hair companies have gotten inventive and have started to describe their hair as ‘Russian’ or ‘Brazilian’ as a way to differentiate themselves from the masses. The truth of the matter is that there are very few companies who sell real authentic hair from any location other than China. For one, with the exception of India, there are very few donors in other countries who are willing to cut their hair off and sell it for extension making purposes. For two, if a company is going to source raw hair material that is not already processed by a manufacturing factory, then they have to be willing and able to carry out the creation process themselves. They have to be willing to take the raw hair material, color it and create the extensions themselves from scratch. This is a huge amount of work that most ‘fast fashion’ hair brands are not willing to do.
The in-house processing is what differentiates Miellee Hair Company from other luxury hair brands. We are one of the few companies that sources hair directly from donors in various countries and then processes the hair ourselves to create the huge variety of colors and textures that you see featured in our store. We do not purchase pre-made hair pieces from factories in China, nor do we outsource the creation process of our extensions to an outside manufacturer. All of our hair pieces are created in house by us. Each piece of hair in our store is individually colored and created for the specific customer. When we use the terms ‘Russian’, ‘Brazilian’, ‘Indian’ or otherwise, you can rest assured that we are using those terms in the real sense - meaning that the hair in question literally came from a donor in that country. This is important because when you use those terms correctly, it means that you can understand characteristics of their hair based on its origin.
The majority of our hair pieces are made using Russian, Brazilian and Indian hair. Here are some of the characteristics of these hair types :
Russian hair is generally a fine to medium in texture. Russian hair is available in shades ranging from dark brown to light blonde. Since it is readily available in lighter color, this is the hair type we use to create our lighter blonde styles and fine-textured pieces.
Brazilian hair comes in a very wide range of fine, medium and thick textures, from silky straight to the tiniest curls. Brazilian hair is available mostly in shades of medium brown to natural black, with the occasional light brown bundle. This is the hair type we use to create the medium-colored pieces, or those requiring a specialized texture .
Indian hair offers a wide range of textures from silky straight to deep curls and is mostly characterized as medium and thick in diameter. Indian hair is mostly available in shades of dark brown to jet black. This is the hair we use to create our darkest styles, and also our thickest diameter pieces.
Between these three hair types, Miellee Hair Company is able to offer a huge variety of products to suit essentially every hair type and skin tone.
